A Different Shade of Strange

I Took the Blue Pill…

…Because everyone really prefers a juicy steak to steaming veggies and gruel.  Jonny Von Golden has directed  two new filmsFatale and Real Gone — for blue pill junkies.

Each film plays with the pause right before the montage of a delicious dream sequence threatens to break into the nightmare’s undertow.  He and co-writer/ co-producer Melissa Green invoke the uncanny as seamlessly as tequila shots slide down the throats of under-aged co-eds.

I Took the Red Pill…

…Because Jonny slipped one into my tequila shot.  The escapist hallucinations induced by the blue pill — noir, burlesque, pale-limbed lovelies — are animated from lifeless dolls into Twilight Zone talking dummies by the gut punch of the films’ red pill.  Jonny has been compared to Nick Zed and Richard Kern, but the more apt likeness is master pharmacist David Lynch.

Great art intuits that that whammy of a red pill — also known as The Great Universal Human Themes in more formal circles — is heightened by dabbling into the magic of a few choice blue pills, not by generic landscaping which only dulls the senses (bad) and bores the viewer (worse).

Fatale and Real Gone play with fantasy to heighten the very real experiences of love, betrayal, sex and fear, cloaking them within the gauze of dreams.
